your old strategies don't work anymore!

i was driving up the interstate today on my way to the office...listening to the radio...on came a contest that offered "caller #7" an opportunity to win a chance at going to a racing school - you've got to understand, this is one of my dreams...i want to race a car...go really fast and not get pulled over by the police...i want to feel the adrenaline of hitting a turn and the g's pressing against me...i want to have the ability to throttle down and have 750 horserpower move me really quickly down a stretch...i've even looked into the costs here - so...i was ready to dial in, ready to take my chances and give it a shot - i was going to be "caller #7"

only one problem...

the phone number wasn't a number...

it was a name...something like, "call 800-got-notn"

here's the problem...

i own this phone

and on this phone...the letters do not match up like they on the 20th century phones...in other words...the "#1" does not have 'a, b, c' on it - my "#1" has the letter 'w' on it....

so...

your cute little name/number strategy doesn't work for me...

it's old and it doesn't translate to the vast number of blackberry, treo, blackjack, Q, and other pda/cell combos - your old strategy is no longer effective...gee...

i wonder if we do that in church - do we ever strop to consider that what worked in late 20th century may not work in the 21st? do we ever slow down long enough and look at something so simple as a phone (or a bulletin, overhead, flannel graph) perhaps doesn't work as an effective strategy?

here's the deal...i wanted to win that contest...i was ready...but i couldn't connect...

same with your church...they want to come...they are ready...can they connect?

That is a great analogy. It works in relationships as well. We are studying the book "The DNA of Relationships" in Sunday School, and we are learning that the old way of doing things doesn't work. We all fall into habits and patterns that can actually not only be ineffective, but destructive. God is doing a new thing...let's get on board!
